We know that the world has yin, yang and yuan. According to some alchemy, from yin we extract pure yang, from yang we extract pure yin.

What is the difference between the worldly yin and yang and the extracted pure yin and yang ? How is yuan qi, pure yin and pure yang, related to the creation of the golden pill ?

Difference between pure yin and yang

To better understand concept like Yin, Yang and Yuan, people should know the three evolving phases from root to trivia, they are pre-pre-heaven state, pre-heaven state and post-heaven state respectively (please refer to the figure attached below). In the post-heaven state (duality realm) Jing, Qi and Shen each features different characteristics. But when in pre-heaven state they are united one and there exists no any division outside. When in pre-pre-heaven state there is but the void prevailing in motion state. From this people can understand Yin, Yang and Yuan actually indicate one thing but from different perspective in post-heaven state. Yin means the thing when it remains submissive, quiet; Yang means the thing when it is active and involved in motion; Yuan (source in Chinese) indicates the thing that is the very source for motion or motionless.

The evolution from pre-heaven state to post-heaven state means some pre-heaven elements get degenerated and lay buried with post-heaven elements. So, Taoism advocates to extract pure Yin or extract pure Yang, aiming at recovering the elements originally possessed. In a word, to reverse the sequence from 0 – 1 – 2 – 3 to 3 – 2 – 1 – 0. The reversal means to return to the very source which is located at the root for all myriads of things. So, you can understand what the meaning for creation of golden pill is by the above knowledge. In fact, golden pill is but the temporary phenomena and cannot last for long.

So in essence, the golden pill is just like a passing phenomena. What is the final end result ? entering the state of "Wu Wei" or in buddhist terms, "Kong" ?

Yuan Qi has always been a badly misunderstood term. People know much about Yin and Yang and it's very obvious. Could you explain abit more about Yuan ?

Thanks.
